PART TWO

THE KILL

Chapter Six

Jonathan actually fell only five feet and landed on a soft bottom, composed of what he did not really care to decide. Mud, certainly, and some of the slime which coated the moat, he supposed, covered by enough water to make him as wet as he had been when he returned from the hunt. But the darkness was so intense he found it difficult to breathe for a moment; the trapdoor had already clanged back into place above his head.

“I forgot to mention it.” Anna’s voice was surprisingly loud and had a hollow quality, suggesting there was some sort of speaking tube leading from the rack into the cell. “But of course there were always two classes of dungeon in these old Norman keeps. One for those who could be described as ordinary malefactors, and a separate black hole for those to whom the baron had actually taken a dislike. And now, I’m afraid you’ve seen the entire castle, and I must leave you. Jonathan? Jonathan, are you all right?”

Oh, and Jonathan, I did understand from the beginning that you had no idea at all about what Otto was working on, but I thought you might like to find out. I also thought it would keep you too interested to worry about other things. And every word I told you about his project was absolutely true. The trouble is, as no one has even an inkling as to where Otto’s theories even started from—what substance, what chemical, even what experiments—only someone in possession of his own notes could ever possibly hope to follow in his footsteps. So I will say this, if you ever see a monstrous-looking creature walking ashore on any of your English beaches, treat him kindly. He will only be a Russian who will have swum or walked all the way from the Soviet Union.”

He heard her heels tapping on the floor for a few seconds, and then there was silence. Not even a drip of water. He was well and truly stuck in. And he had been well and truly dropped in. The plain fact of the matter was that where the last time Anna had been overconfident, considering him as only a boy—and he
